“Celestial Reflections” in an alpine wilderness. I photographed these Milky Way stars over an unnamed lake near Hayden Pass (10,375 ft. / 3,162 m.), on the edge of the High Uintas Wilderness, Utah. Red glow from Salt Lake City metro area, 55 miles (89 km) away. Creating an image like this has been a dream of mine since I was 15 years old, when my father took my cousin and I on our first backpacking trip into the Eagle Cap Wilderness of Oregon's Wallowa Mountains. Canon EOS 5D Mark III • LF 15mm F/2.8 Fisheye lens @ F/3.5, 30 seconds, ISO 6400 (more technique available in my eBook: NightScapeBook.com) . . #milkyway_nightscapes

Yellowstone Stars - Milky Way over Lower Yellowstone Falls, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. After setting up for this shot, I waited another hour for the Milky Way to rotate closer to the falls and get a better alignment. During the time exposure, I light painted the falls and the canyon with a large studio strobe (powered by two Vagabond Portable Power Systems). Planning, calculations, and building custom lighting equipment for this shot took almost two months. Canon EOS 5D Mark III • Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 @ f/2.8, 15 sec, ISO 8000. This photo is on the cover of my new “Milky Way NightScapes” eBook: www.NightScapeBook.com . . #milkyway_nightscapes
