Last week, @shohei_shigematsu gave the inaugural lecture at @columbiagsapp, where he spoke on the increasing programmatic expectations of museums. OMA's extension to the @mnbaq not only added valuable new gallery space, but by lifting the new galleries upward, created a lobby atrium that serves as an indoor public square. Since its opening in 2016, this space has hosted musical performances, talks, large-scale installations, and galas while functioning as a new gateway between city, park, and museum. #OMAArchive OMA's proposal for @lacma reorganized the dispersed, continental model of the museum's separate pavilions in to one single Pangaea. This move would have allowed for a near-utopian condition where the history of the arts could be told as a single and simultaneous narrative showing moments of chronological coincidence, autonomy, influence, and convergence.
As students head back to school we're taking a look at #OMANewYork's educational projects. From the #OMAArchive, the IIT McCormick Tribune Campus Center sought to reinvigorate the urbanism inherent in Mies van der Rohe's 1940 master plan for the Illinois Institute of Technology. The campus center's internal circulation as well as its location--in the center of campus, directly underneath the "L"--were guided by OMA's study of the intersecting diagonal "desire lines" that students took through the campus. These paths were maintained within the building, linking the multiplicity of activities underneath one sloping concrete slab. Coupled with a muffling stainless steel cylinder, this roof protects against the noise of the L passing above the center. at Illinois Institute of Technology

Shohei Shigematsu will deliver the inaugural lecture for Fall 2019 at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. Sharing his experience with projects across various scales and typologies, Sho narrates OMA New York’s preoccupations in the city—from the archives, the Whitney Museum extension, 23 E 22nd Street and 425 Park Avenue, to more recent projects such as Cai Guo-Qiang’s East Village studio, the newly completed Sotheby’s Headquarters and 121 E 22nd Street and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery expansion.

Last week was the opening of Anthony McCall's (@anthonymccallstudio) solo exhibition at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, taking over the entirety of the museum's 1905 Building galleries. This would be the final exhibition in the building before construction begins on OMA/Shohei Shigematsu's campus redesign. The AK360 expansion plan will include a scenic bridge that connects the original 1905 building to the OMA-designed North building via a winding path through Buffalo's historic Olmsted Park. at Albright-Knox Art Gallery
There is one month left to see Treasures from Chatsworth @sothebys. The exhibition makes use of the reorganized gallery scheme designed by OMA/Shohei Shigematsu (@shohei_shigematsu), which offered extreme adaptability by creating twenty unique gallery types across four floors of Sotheby's New York headquarters. at Sotheby's
